Cosmetic dentistry is one of the most effective ways to improve your appearance in a very short time. Popular cosmetic dentistry procedures can make you look years younger without any plastic surgery. So how do you choose a cosmetic dentist and how do you make sure you have chosen someone with the training and experience needed to create your dream smile?
Ask where the dentist received his or her training in cosmetic dentistry? Special training is needed to be an effective aesthetic dentist. If the answer to your question is “dental school” then it is time to resume your search.
Ask how many cosmetic dentistry continuing education courses the dentist has taken? When were they taken? Do the dentist and their staff members still attend continuing education in this field?
Find out what dental organizations does the dentist belong to? Membership in the American Dental Association is normal for most dentists but doesn’t mean a thing when we are talking about cosmetic dentistry.
The most important part of choosing a cosmetic dentist — finding someone that you trust. You should feel comfortable talking to the dentist about your wants and expectations. However – your cosmetic dentist has extensive training in creating beautiful, natural looking, healthy smiles – leave the details to them!
Cosmetic dentistry ranges from simple tooth whitening or porcelain veneers to full-mouth makeovers. Most patients can achieve a beautiful smile without resorting to extremes so you may be surprised by how affordable having your dream smile can be. Remember that patient financing can usually be arranged.
Find out how to get your dream smile today! Contact Dr. Beth Snyder in Doylestown, PA at 215-348-9922 to schedule your consultation for cosmetic dentistry.

Certain medicines can hurt your teeth. This damage can include discoloration, gum disease, tooth decay and even mouth sores.
Discolored Teeth can be caused by long term use of some antibiotics including liquid forms of the drugs. Tetracycline can cause permanent tooth discoloration in children under 10 and pregnant women who are exposed to tetracycline may give birth to babies with the condition. Liquid amoxicillin was found to be a cause of tooth discoloration cases in a study completed in The Netherlands.
Fluoride Drops are a great way to prevent cavities in kids who don’t have access to fluoridated water but too much can cause teeth to become discolored or damage enamel on the teeth.
Anti-seizure Medications are vitally important drugs but can promote the grown of excess gum tissues which can interfere with good oral hygiene. Regular visits to your dentist can control this problem.
Aspirin taken every day is good for your heart but chewing it can lead to mouth sores caused by irritating the tissues of the mouth. The surface of the tooth can also be damaged.
Dry mouth is a side effect of many medications. Dry mouth can lead to tooth decay and gum disease because our saliva flow washes away debris and strengthens our teeth. When the mouth is dry bacteria colonies can grow out of control. Check the prescription insert to see if dry mouth is a side effect. Ask us about your options for treating dry mouth.
Do not stop taking your medications without the advice of your physician. Tooth staining or enamel pitting caused by medications does not respond to dental bleaching.
If your teeth have been damaged by medications then cosmetic dentistry can help. Dental veneers are a wonderful option for giving you back your old smile (or maybe one that’s even better).

We all love a beautiful white smile – but what if you also love a glass of wine every now and then. Red wine offers added health benefits but many people stick with white because they think it won’t stain their teeth. Are they making the right choice?
The answer may surprise you. According to Dr. Mark Wolff at the NYU College of Dentistry “Red wine is an amazing staining material, but white wine makes the teeth more susceptible to staining. When you drink an acidic beverage, you wind up in a scenario where you etch the outer surface of the tooth slightly, making it more susceptible to chemicals that have pigment in them.”
The choice may not be if your choice of beverage will stain your teeth but when the staining will occur. Sip a glass of merlot and you may notice stains right away — drink the white wine and then end the evening with a cup of coffee and you’ll end up with dark stains as well. Dr. Wolff noted “White wine and anything that’s deeply pigmented will cause stains.” He continued “We’ve looked at blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, sodas, teas and sports drinks.” He suggests drink in moderation and when you’ve finished, rinse your mouth with water. “Don’t run to the bathroom and brush right after.”The enamel on your teeth has been softened by the beverage so you need to give your saliva some time to remineralize your teeth. After about 30 minutes you can brush your teeth without worrying about damage.
If too much red or white has left your smile looking dull and dingy a simple teeth whitening can give you back that glossy, healthy looking smile. Our Zoom whitening system can transform your stained smile faster than you thought possible.

The ugly yellow nicotine stains on their teeth are usually the first dental side effect that smokers think of. But more worrisome is the effect that smoking has on your gums and other oral tissues.
Smokers are six times more likely to have severe gum destruction when compared to non-smokers. Treating gum disease is more difficult when the patient smokes because smoking reduces our ability to heal. Treating gum disease in patients who smoke is a big challenge for dentists.
Recent research has also shown that smokers have lower levels of the good kind of oral bacteria and much higher levels of the bad or disease related types of bacteria, especially the types that are linked to severe periodontal disease.
The best thing to do – quit using any type of tobacco product! Tobacco is highly addictive but their are numerous treatments that can help you stay on track. If you do use tobacco products it is important to let your dentist know. You may be scheduled for more frequent dental hygiene appointments to help keep your gums healthy. If you smoke and already have developed periodontal disease it is important to work with your dentist and hygienist to manage your disease.
Please contact our Doylestown office at 215-348-9922 to arrange your dental examination appointment including oral cancer screening. We look forward to addressing your oral health care needs and giving you the beautiful smile you have always dreamed of.

The internet is a terrific tool. We use it for research, finding directions, seeking advice, making reservations and even to find health care information. The problem is that not all of the information on the internet comes from legitimate sources. One potentially dangerous problem that is appearing in Europe and the US is do-it-yourself tooth whitening advice.
You-tube videos, blogs and websites extolling the virtues of DIY dental whitening abound. Most cite the expense of professional tooth whitening — what they don’t tell you is that some of these “treatments” can actually dissolve your tooth enamel leaving your teeth permanently dark in color, extremely sensitive and subject to decay. Repairing this type of damage is extremely costly.
According to Anthony Eder, Clinical Director of the London Tooth Wear Center “Household baking soda is very abrasive, so that with repeated use the white enamel may be worn away and leave teeth browner and with increased sensitivity. Salt crystals will scratch the enamel. Any treatment involving acid is particularly harmful.”
Professional tooth whitening is designed to safely brighten a dingy smile. Not all types of whitening work for all types of stained teeth and your dentist can tell you what method will work best for you. For patients with severely damaged or destroyed enamel no amount of bleaching will get their teeth white and because of increased sensitivity any attempt will result in increased discomfort.
A whiter smile is a wonderful goal — but to make sure you reach that goal safely please contact our office today to schedule your tooth whitening consultation. Remember, teeth that have not been professionally cleaned will not whiten evenly so it is important to visit your dental hygienist prior to your whitening appointment. Our smile is one of the first things people notice about us and a dingy, stained grin can give the wrong impression. Wanting a bright, white smile is not a modern phenomenon. Techniques for brightening a dingy smile go back hundreds of years. In the 1100′s people were told to scrub their teeth with a sage and salt mixture to make them firm, white and healthy. In later years different types of acids were tried as a method of stripping stains. Unfortunately they also stripped away all the enamel on the teeth! During the 1980′s we started to see the beginning of in-office bleaching treatments and today there are many options for a whiter smile.
Bleaching your teeth under the direction of your dentist is very safe and effective but the abundance of drugstore products have given rise to a new dental health problem – over-bleaching. American’s spend almost a billion dollars each year on over-the-counter whitening products. Some of these products are effective, others are simply destructive but they are all being over-used.
The problem with becoming a whitening addict and over-bleaching is that overuse of these products actually strips away the protective enamel on your teeth which, ironically, will cause them to look yellow. Since tooth enamel doesn’t grow back, the teeth are left weakened and are prone to decay and damage.
Your smile can be whitened safely – but safety is the key. To protect your smile it is always best to have your dentist supervise your bleaching process. For those who are seeking immediate gratification – the Zoom in-office bleaching system gives you a whiter, brighter smile in about an hour.
