How To Choose The Perfect Dentist for the Perfect Smile

Cosmetic dentistry is one of the most effective ways to improve your appearance in a very short time. Popular cosmetic dentistry procedures can make you look years younger without any plastic surgery.  So how do you choose a cosmetic dentist and how do you make sure you have chosen someone with the training and experience needed to create your dream smile?

Ask lots of questions!

Ask where the dentist received his or her training in cosmetic dentistry?  Special training is needed to be an effective aesthetic dentist. If the answer to your question is “dental school” then it is time to resume your search.

Ask how many cosmetic dentistry continuing education courses the dentist has taken? When were they taken? Do the dentist and their staff members still attend continuing education in this field?

Find out what dental organizations does the dentist belong to? Membership in the American Dental Association is normal for most dentists but doesn’t mean a thing when we are talking about cosmetic dentistry.

The most important part of choosing a cosmetic dentist — finding someone that you trust. You should feel comfortable talking to the dentist about your wants and expectations. However – your cosmetic dentist has extensive training in creating beautiful, natural looking, healthy smiles – leave the details to them!

Cosmetic dentistry ranges from simple tooth whitening  or porcelain veneers to full-mouth makeovers. Most patients can achieve a beautiful smile without resorting to extremes so you may be surprised by how affordable having your dream smile can be. Remember that patient financing can usually be arranged.

Some Medicine Hurts Teeth

Certain medicines can hurt your teeth.  This damage can include discoloration, gum disease, tooth decay and even mouth sores.

Discolored Teeth can be caused by long term use of some antibiotics including liquid forms of the drugs. Tetracycline can cause permanent tooth discoloration in children under 10 and pregnant women who are exposed to tetracycline may give birth to babies with the condition. Liquid amoxicillin was found to be a cause of tooth discoloration cases in a study completed in The Netherlands.

Fluoride Drops are a great way to prevent cavities in kids who don’t have access to fluoridated water but too much can cause teeth to become discolored or damage enamel on the teeth.

Anti-seizure Medications  are vitally important drugs but can promote the grown of excess gum tissues which can interfere with good oral hygiene. Regular visits to your dentist can control this problem.

Aspirin taken every day is good for your heart but chewing it can lead to mouth sores caused by irritating the tissues of the mouth. The surface of the tooth can also be damaged.

Dry mouth is a side effect of many medications. Dry mouth can lead to tooth decay and gum disease because our saliva flow washes away debris and strengthens our teeth. When the mouth is dry bacteria colonies can grow out of control. Check the prescription insert to see if dry mouth is a side effect. Ask us about your options for treating dry mouth.

Do not stop taking your medications without the advice of your physician. Tooth staining or enamel pitting caused by medications does not  respond to dental bleaching.

If your teeth have been damaged by medications then cosmetic dentistry can help. Dental veneers are a wonderful option for giving you back your old smile (or maybe one that’s even better).

Please contact Doylestown, PA cosmetic dentist Dr. Beth Snyder at 215-348-9922 for more information about dental veneers and other cosmetic treatments for your damaged smile.

3 Tooth Destroying Habits

Have you experienced damage to your teeth or existing dental work but aren’t quite sure how it happened? Here are three bad habits that cause serious damage:

  1. Chewing on ice.  Mom was right when she told you to stop chewing ice. Crunching something hard like an ice cube can cause breakage but the cold temperature actually makes it worse for your teeth. The combination can actually cause teeth to fracture or can cause microscopic cracks in the enamel. Those small cracks can lead to big problems over time.
  2. Using teeth as tools. Teeth are not scissors, pliers or anything else. We’ve seen people who have used their teeth to open bags of snacks and we’ve seen people who attempted to unstick the top of their nailpolish bottle with their teeth. It is no wonder that so many people chip and break perfectly healthy teeth in this fashion. Of course if you have a dental restoration in the teeth you are using instead of your pliers you know it has to end badly. For some reason this is a habit that is especially hard to break. The good news is that cosmetic dentistry is able to restore your fractured tooth back to its natural looking beauty.
  3. Scrubbing too hard.  Some people feel that their teeth are getting cleaner if they use a hard bristle toothbrush or scrub really hard. No, they are not! You are damaging your teeth and gums when using those brushes or when you press too hard. The teeth may become sensitive and gum tissue can be damaged.  Use a soft bristle toothbrush and brush gently, but thoroughly. Combined with a good flossing every day, your soft bristle toothbrush is your smile’s best friend.

Facelift Dentures Make You Look Younger

How would you like to have the most comfortable dentures you’ve ever worn and look several years younger without undergoing plastic surgery? It might seem too good to be true but FaceLift Dentures can take years off of your appearance while allowing you to eat, smile and laugh with confidence.Dr. Beth Snyder offers FaceLift Dentures that take years off your appearance.

The reason there are so many denture adhesive commercials on television is because most people are wearing dentures that don’t fit. Making dentures correctly has become somewhat of a lost art. Many patients shop for the lowest price when they need dentures. This usually leads to a new set of dentures after a short period of time because the “bargain” denture is uncomfortable or loose.

Bargain dentures also tend to leave your face with a “sunken” or shortened appearance which makes you look older than you are. Using neuromuscular dentistry techniques we can now create a denture that places your bite in the optimal position for comfort and, because the muscles in your face are relaxed and stable, your face looks years younger.

Contact Dr. Beth Snyder in Doylestown, PA today at 215+348-9922 to find out more about FaceLift Dentures and neuromuscular dentistry. Your appearance and comfort are important — call us today to schedule your consultation appointment.

Chipped Teeth in Doylestown, PA

Chipping a tooth is more common than you might think. The reasons for the damage range from silly to serious and include people who grind their teeth so severely they cause breakage. How we repair the damage depends on factors such as the size and location of the chip, which tooth is chipped and the overall oral health of the patient. Options for repairing a chip include bonding and dental veneers. For a tooth that is badly chipped or cracked a full dental crown may be needed. If the damaged tooth is one that is easily seen when you smile please make sure that the dentist has received extensive training in cosmetic dentistry so that your smile will be as beautiful after the restoration as it was before the repair – maybe even better!

For smaller chips dental bonding may be sufficient. A tooth colored restoration material is bonded to the damaged surface and carefully sculpted to look just like your original tooth. The technique has some advantages but it is also subject to staining and may not last as long as a dental veneer.

Dental veneers are thin pieces of ceramic material that are created in a dental lab. They are matched to your tooth color and provide a very lifelike appearance. The dental veneers are bonded to your natural teeth and allow for the correction of chipped, discolored or misshapen teeth. A dental crown may be needed if the damage to the tooth is too severe to be corrected with the other alternatives.

If you have chipped a tooth please contact Dr. Beth Snyder at 215-348-9922 to discuss your treatment options in the Philadelphia area. Please don’t delay, small chips can easily become larger, and the damage to the tooth more extensive over time.

Red lipstick is showing up in all the fashion magazines and on the red carpet. Are you going to brave the red trend? Some women avoid wearing bright lip colors because they don’t want to draw attention to their smile.

I know people who spent years avoiding  laughing or smiling in public because they were so unhappy with the appearance of their teeth. Having a cosmetic dental makeover can be truly life-changing for our patients. The freedom to grin, no matter who is looking, is truly powerful.

What’s your reason for not highlighting your smile? If your teeth are yellow or dingy a smile tooth whitening using Zoom! can have your teeth shades whiter in just about an hour. Crooked teeth can be straightened using Invisalign which is nearly invisible when worn and easily removable for eating and cleaning.

Dental veneers and crowns can be used to correct crooked, crowded, discolored or misshapen teeth almost instantly! You can have your perfect smile in just a couple of visits and then head to the mall to pick up that perfect shade of red lipstick!
