Has your smile changed over the years? As we age our teeth tend to shift and become more crowded. Many patients who had beautiful smiles throughout their lives find that the smile they are looking at in the mirror is not the one they remember — nor is it the one they want.
When it comes to straightening teeth in adults there are a few choices. Traditional braces with brackets and wires can be used but a better choice for many is the Invisalign system. Invisalign is a series of clear trays that fit over your teeth. Just as the name implies they are essentially invisible when being worn. Over time as the patient works through the series of trays their teeth are being straightened — and no one knows you are essentially wearing braces! The trays are easily easily removed for eating or cleaning your teeth. In less time that you think you’ll have that beautiful, straight smile back once more.

Our smile is one of the first things people notice about us and a dingy, stained grin can give the wrong impression. Wanting a bright, white smile is not a modern phenomenon. Techniques for brightening a dingy smile go back hundreds of years. In the 1100′s people were told to scrub their teeth with a sage and salt mixture to make them firm, white and healthy. In later years different types of acids were tried as a method of stripping stains. Unfortunately they also stripped away all the enamel on the teeth! During the 1980′s we started to see the beginning of in-office bleaching treatments and today there are many options for a whiter smile.
Bleaching your teeth under the direction of your dentist is very safe and effective but the abundance of drugstore products have given rise to a new dental health problem – over-bleaching. American’s spend almost a billion dollars each year on over-the-counter whitening products. Some of these products are effective, others are simply destructive but they are all being over-used.
The problem with becoming a whitening addict and over-bleaching is that overuse of these products actually strips away the protective enamel on your teeth which, ironically, will cause them to look yellow. Since tooth enamel doesn’t grow back, the teeth are left weakened and are prone to decay and damage.
Your smile can be whitened safely – but safety is the key. To protect your smile it is always best to have your dentist supervise your bleaching process. For those who are seeking immediate gratification – the Zoom in-office bleaching system gives you a whiter, brighter smile in about an hour.
If you are thinking of whitening your teeth please contact us at 215-348-9922 to discuss your options.
An interesting new product is in clinical testing in the United States – this new product uses a nasal mist to deliver anesthetic. If everything works out in the trials this means that someday you could have certain procedures done in your dentists office without having a shot of anesthetic! We don’t really have any details about the product but the idea is exciting.
In the meantime, our office uses cutting edge technology to make your visit more comfortable and as relaxing as possible. While we don’t have spritzy anesthetics yet, we do have The Wand. The Wand is a computerized device that slowly and gently delivers the precise amount of anesthetic needed. Most patients don’t even realize they have gotten their anesthesia – the Wand is so gentle.
If you have been avoiding dental care because you are anxious about visiting the dentist please contact our Doylestown office at 215-348-9922. We will be happy to discuss your concerns and I think that you will find us conscientious and attentive to your needs.

Patients who wear dentures often feel that their smiles look fake, or they feel self-conscious when they smile or laugh. Many also feel that they look much older than they feel or that chewing is difficult or uncomfortable. I’m happy to say that all of these problems can be solved with a facelift denture.
Most dentists make dentures the way they learned in dental school many years ago. Those methods create serviceable dentures but they give the patient a sunken look around the mouth and cheeks leaving them looking older. Using neuromuscular dentistry principles we can now create dentures that are fitted in direct relation to the muscles of your face and mouth. The result is a denture that puts your bite in the optimum position, creating stable, relaxed muscles, a more toned look to your face and a more youthful appearance – without plastic surgery!
A great smile can make a huge difference in your life. The confidence that comes from looking younger, being able to smile, laugh and eat without worry is immeasurable. If your old dentures are making you look and feel older than you are, maybe it’s time to talk about facelift dentures and how they can change your life. Please contact us today at Beth Snyder, DMD at 215-348-9922 to arrange your consultation.

Periodontal disease (periodontitis) is slow to establish and usually silent until its later stages. Symptoms include bleeding gums, sore or itchy gums, loose teeth, change in bite, bad breath, and acute gum abscesses.
In general, the treatment of periodontal disease is a race: the body healing and regaining attachment vs. bacteria re-establishing in the pocket. Therefore, treatment should speed up the healing process, and/or interfere with the recolonization of the bacteria. Today we have a number of tools to
help us do this. One such tool is a laser. The selective removal of the diseased lining of the periodontal pocket combined with the antimicrobial effects of the laser make it an ideal tool for the treatment of periodontal disease.
Lasers are known for their ability to selectively remove tissue and to destroy microbes. A laser incision heals faster than one made by mechanical methods. Few diseases are as chronic and as serious as periodontal (gum) disease. It can be relatively painless and asymptomatic. Untreated, gum inflammation (gingivitis) can produce periodontal disease. This can mean pockets between teeth and gums, bone loss and eventual tooth loss. For this reason we meticulously look for the slightest signs of periodontal disease.
If there are areas of concern we will not hesitate to offer the latest in in-office therapy Microsonic and Laser techniques. Finally, we will not hesitate to refer you to a periodontal specialist if necessary.

Muscles and jaw joints should naturally work together. When there is a problem with one or the other, symptoms arise that may include:
- jaw stiffness, clicking, and pain
- headaches and migraines
- difficulty swallowing
- ear (ringing) and neck pain
- shoulder and back pain
- forward head posturing
Temporomandibular Joint disorder (TMJ) can mimic many different things. Patients experience frustration as it may be difficult to diagnose and treat. Often the symptoms cross over into several different specialties in medicine and dentistry.
Changes in your bite position may result in TMJ symptoms or aggravate an existing temporomandibular joint disorder. You may have been told that it’s something you simply have to live with. Avoiding hard foods, taking over the counter or prescription medications, applying warm compresses, and getting cortisone shots provides short term relief… BUT wouldn’t you prefer to live better? Superficial care is a temporary solution to a problem that we have a deeper understanding of and can offer a long term treatment solution.
What is Neuromuscular Dentistry?
In dental school, we were taught that the teeth were attached to the jaws that were part of the head and neck. There are also muscles, joints, nerves and blood vessels that make up this whole head and neck complex. . . somewhere along the line some of us forgot that.
Dentists only interested in treating the teeth independent of the patient, as a whole, may be doing a disservice to their patients. Neuromuscular dentistry goes beyond – not only the hard tissues but also the soft tissues – muscles and nerves. We understand that there is a balance between the body’s ability to adapt to imperfection and the stresses placed on its physiologic range of motion and body posture. Thus our office relies on having the ability to objectively measure muscle function and correlate it to a proper jaw posture and its movements in function.
Neuromuscular dentistry determines your correct jaw posture prior to restoration. It differs from the common dentistry approach which treats the teeth and assumes the teeth, active muscles, and the jaw joints will accommodate to the treated occlusion.
So if TMJ pain is making you miserable, call us to schedule a comprehensive exam. We will take the time to personally diagnose your problem and explain a course of treatment that would be best for you. (more…)

If you’ve ever had to have a crown, veneer, or bridge made you’ve probably had the yucky experience of having a conventional impression taken. Its when you bite into a tray of messy gloppy material to produce a replica of your teeth and gums. Fortunately, there is now a better way that we can offer our patients!
Cadent’s iTero (cadentitero.com) digital impression system provides a revolutionary alternative eliminating the discomfort of gagging, the annoyance of retakes, and the inconvenience of remakes.
then sent to our preferred dental lab which creates the restoration. The biggest benefit of iTero is consistency. The marginal integrity is superb, with minimal adjustment needed to the occlusal and interproximal contacts. This simply means that it fits. It fits the first time and it fits well.
You will be thrilled to experience a new technology that allows us to take impressions for precision-fit
restorations. All this, a shorter turnaround time, and without placing the gooey gaggy material into your mouth.

Snoring can ruin your and your bed partner’s sleep, making both of you miserable and tired. Did you know that snoring is often associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea? OSA is when you stop breathing while you sleep, causing your body to fitfully awaken just enough to get you breathing again.
While you are often unaware, because you do not fully wake up, you are not getting a good restorative sleep as the necessary full range of sleep cycles is constantly being disrupted. Symptoms include daytime drowsiness, irritability, lower productivity, hampered short and long term memory, and impaired decision making skills. Long term, it can be a huge strain on the body by contributing to obesity, diabetes, and causing damage to the heart and other organs.
If left untreated, this manageable disorder can be life-threatening.
Call us today to find out what you can do to bring back a peaceful night’s sleep.
